WAIPAHU, HI -- Hawai`i returned to the win column with a 2-0 win over Robert Morris in the championship match of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Shootout Sunday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine snapped a four-match winless streak and improved to 3-4-2.
Senior forward Natasha Kai scored the Hawai`i goals, both off services from sophomore defender Shawn Higa. The Rainbow Wahine got on the board just 1:37 into the match when Higa sent a through ball to Kai who beat the Robert Morris defense and sent a low shot past Colonial goalkeeper Elizabeth Moss.
Higa and Kai hooked up again in the 38th minute off a UH free kick. Higa served a high floater from just inside midfield and Kai flew through the RMU defense for diving header that hit the back of the net. The two-goal performance was Kai's second multiple-goal match of the season and 17th of her career.
The native of Kahuku, Oahu, also reached milestone during the match when she became the Western Athletic Conference's all-time leader in shots. With her sixth shot of the evening, Kai ran her career total to 369, surpassing a seven-year old record by Shauna Rohbock of Brigham Young.
UH will next head to California for a pair of non-conference road matches. First up for the Rainbow Wahine will be nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PST.
