LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 4 Long Beach State continued its torrid assault on Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents tonight, sweeping No. 6 Hawai`i by scores of 30-23, 30-19, 30-28 at the Walter Pyramid.

UH fifth-year senior setter Daniel Rasay got the nod in game one, replacing starter Brian Beckwith who is nursing a sore knee. The Warriors hit only .273 in the game with middle blocker Dio Dante proving to be the most effective slamming down six of his seven swings.

But it wasn't nearly enough as the 49ers came out on fire hitting .440 collectively in the game. The offense was direct by last week's MPSF Player of the Week Tyler Hildebrand who on the night dished out 47 assists in 77 attempts for a .610 average.

Game two was all 49ers as Long Beach State. UH pulled to within 11-9 early, but LBSU would go on an 11-3 run and eventually close out the game, 30-19.

Hawai`i came out emotionally charged in game three, showing signs of life. UH led by scores of 7-2 and 26-22, but LBSU came on late, reeling off five straight points to take a 27-26 lead and then squeaked out the victory, 30-28, to close out the first of two matches between these two programs this week.

The Warriors (16-8, 12-7 MPSF) were out hit by the 49ers .416 to .286 in the three-game set. The 49ers (18-8, 12-7 MPSF) are now tied with UH for fourth place in the league race with places two through four hosting quarterfinal matches on April 23.

The two teams meet again Friday night at 7:30 p.m. PST at the Walter Pyramid. KKEA broadcaster Kevin Hashiro will have the play-by-play call beginning at 4:30 p.m. HST.
