'Bows Take WAC Series With 3-2 Win Over San Jose State

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (15-17, 3-6 WAC) took the series with a 3-2 win over the San Jose State Spartans (16-11-1, 6-3) in front of a crowd of 2,309 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday. Darrell Fisherbaugh (2-1) came on in relief to get the win while SJSU's Daniel Crombie (1-2) took the loss.

Joseph Spiers continued his great series, going 3-for-4 with a run and one RBI. Isaac Omura added a 2-for-3 game with two doubles and one RBI while Rocky Russo went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Hawai`i got out to an early lead as Spiers drove in Matthew Inouye in the bottom of the second. UH looked to add to their lead but left the bases loaded, keeping it at 1-0.

The 'Bows added another run in the fifth as Russo doubled in Spiers to make it 2-0 before a big two-run single by SJSU's Daniel Fitch tied the game at 2-2.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh, when Omura doubled in Gregory Kish to push the Rainbows to a 3-2 advantage. But UH again squandered an opportunity to gain some distance from the Spartans, leaving the bases loaded.

San Jose State had their chance, loading the bases in the ninth, but Fisherbaugh was able to force a groundout, giving Hawai`i the 3-2 victory.

The win was UH's first on a Sunday and gave the 'Bows their first series win since sweeping Florida State in mid-March.

The Rainbows will head on their second roadtrip next week, playing a mid-week non-conference game at San Francisco on Wednesday, April 6, then a three-game WAC series in Neveda.
