HONOLULU - Right-handed pitcher
Ricky Bauer tossed 4.2 innings to pitch Hawai'i (14-17, 2-6 WAC) past San Jose State (16-10-1, 6-2 WAC), 6-5, in the second game of a doubleheader tonight at Les Murakami Stadium, snapping UH's seven-game losing streak.
The 'Bows jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning with all of the runs coming after two were out. Nate Thurber drew a walk and scored on Schafer Magana's double down the left field line. Luis Avila then doubled to left to drive home Magana. Avila advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on Esteban Lopez's single to center. Joseph Spiers then drove a 1-1 pitch to the wall in center to knock in Lopez from second.
SJSU's Travis Becktel led off the third inning with an opposite field homer to right center. The Spartans then took the lead in the fifth, scoring four times on four hits chasing UH starter Colby Summer.
But UH responded in their half of the fifth as Lopez single through the left side of the infield and then scored from first base on Spiers double to right center.
The 'Bows made it 6-5 in the seventh inning as Magana doubled to right centerfield and scored the game-winner on Avila's double down the left field line.
Bauer evened his record at 2-2 spacing four hits over the outing while striking out one. Branden Dewing started the game for SJSU and was relieved in the sixth by Matt Winck (1-2) who suffered the loss.
The rubber-game of the series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
