Warriors Tame Tigers, Host Long Beach State In MPSF Quarterfinal Match

HONOLULU - No. 5 Hawai`i defeated No. 13 Pacific on Senior Night tonight in straight games 30-20, 30-23, 30-25 at the Stan Sheriff Center. With the victory, the Warriors host Long Beach State next Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs.

UH came out in Game One and made a quick statement - it wanted to host the quarterfinals next Saturday.

Senior Pedro Azenha was on fire. He hit .615 in the game with nine kills and and four aces to spark the Warriors. Setter Brian Beckwith picked apart the Tiger defensive scheme as UH hit a sizzling .533 collectively.

Game Two went pretty much the same as UH raced out to a 19-9 lead and cruised to a 30-23 win. Azenha stayed hot slamming down five more kills. As a team, UH hit only .030 in the second, but was aided by the Tigers 14 hitting errors and two service miscues. UOP hit in negative numbers (-.105) in game three.

Game Three, Pacific showed some grit taking a 15-12 lead at the halfway point. But the Warriors roared back tying it at 19 before going on a mini 4-0 run to earn some breathing room. UH finished off the match with a 30-25 win.

Azenha posted a match-high 19 kills on Senior Night. UH's only other senior, Daniel Rasay, came in twice to set and handed out six assists.

No. 5 Hawai`i, seeded fourth, hosts No. 4 Long Beach State, seeded fifth, next Saturday, April 23, in one of four MPSF quarterfinal matchups. The match is slated for 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, April 19, at 8 .m. at the SCC Box Office and all etickethawaii locations.
