HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (18-20, 5-8 WAC) won a pitcher's duel over the No. 15 Rice Owls (24-13, 6-7) 3-2 in front of a crowd of 2,775 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday.
Stephen Bryant (5-3) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up just two runs with five strikeouts to get the win.
Steven Wright came in and pitched 2.0 perfect innings, striking out five of the sixth batters he faced, to get his second save of the year.
Josh Geer (7-3) pitched well for the Owls, giving up three runs on just three hits with 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings, but took the loss.
Adam Roberts had the big bat for the 'Bows, going 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double and a run. Daniel Magana was also 1-for-3 with one RBI.
The Owls scored a run in the top of the first on a wild pitch, and held the 1-0 lead until the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Roberts hit a two-out, two-run double to right-center, scoring Derek DuPree and Isaac Omura, to give UH the lead. In the very next at bat, Magana then hit a single that took a high bounce over the Rice thirdbaseman, scoring Roberts to push the UH advantage to 3-1.
Rice scored another run in the seventh before Wright came in to shut the door in the last two innings, striking out the side in the ninth, to give Hawai`i the 3-2 victory.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
