HONOLULU - No. 3 Hawai`i swept Ball State tonight in a non-conference match 30-23, 30-25, 30-22 in front of 2,586 (3,982 issued) at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Warriors (12-4) got an unexpected boost from reserve outside hitter Matt Carere. The junior transfer from Victoria, B.C., Canada, got his first start at UH and posted 11 kills while hitting .381 on the evening. He got the start in the spot where Jose Delgado and Lauri Hakala have been platooning.
Leading UH offensively was outside hitter Matt Bender who slammed down 13 kills and hit .400, while his counterpart at the other outside hitter spot, Pedro Azenha, recorded 12 kills.
Ball State (10-8) was led by Nick Meyer who slammed down a match-high 15 kills.
The two teams close out the brief two-match series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. on KFVE-TV and KKEA 1420AM radio.
