Warriors Sweep Cardinal

UH Leads MPSF With 6-0 Mark

Box Score

HONOLULU - Senior outside hitter Pedro Azenha had a match-high 17 kills in leading No. 3 Hawai`i to a three-game sweep of No. 10 Stanford 30-21, 30-26, 30-23 tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

A crowd of 3,016 (4,242 tickets issued) watch an inspired Warrior offensive attack hit .351 led by Azenha's .520 kill percentage.

UH also set up a solid block up front, outblocking Stanford 12.0 to 4.5. Maulia LaBarre led UH with six block assists.

Game One saw a nip-and-tuck battle at the midway point, as UH held a slim 15-14 lead. But that was as close as the Cardinal would get as UH went on a 5-0 run and finally closed out the game, 30-21.

Game Two was deadlocked at seven all, but another quick outburst by Hawai`i saw them go on an 8-3 spurt and basically played sideout the rest of the game to win, 30-26.

Dio Dante gave UH some solid serving in Game Three, notching six-straight point early in the game to enable UH to take a 13-7 lead. Stanford had 10 hitting errors in the game and hit a mere .132 for the match.

Azenha hit .520 on the night with 17 kills. Teammate Maulia LaBarre was the only other hitter in double figures with 11 kills. Brian Beckwith set 39 assists in 78 attempts for a .500 assist average while also digging up nine balls.

Hawai`i improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Stanford fell to 3-8 and 2-6 MPSF.

The Warriors are idle next week before closing out this homestand with a pair of matches Feb. 17 and 18 against USC.
