HONOLULU - No. 3 ranked Hawai`i got 19 kills from
Pedro Azenha as the Warriors were taken to the limit tonight by unranked USC, 28-30, 31-29, 30-19, 32-34, 15-11, at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 2,394 (3,833 tickets issued) saw their Warriors rebound after coming out flat and dropping the first game, 30-28.
UH then got hot offensively hitting .353 in Game Two and pounding out a .524 hitting percentage in Game Three to go up two games to one.
But a scrappy USC squad eeked out Game Four 34-32 to even the match at two apiece.
In Game Five, the lead seesawed back and forth until the match was dead even at 10. UH then took an 13-10 lead on a kill by Maulia LaBarre, a USC hitting error, and a kill by Matt Bender.
Following a kill by USC's Juan Figueroa, the Warriors closed out the match on a kill by Azenha and a USC bad set.
Hawai`i improves to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. USC falls to 4-11 and 1-7. The two teams close out the two-match series Friday night at 7 p.m. at the SSC.
