Runners Pace UH Presence at Husky Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. - Sophomore Dana Buchanan paced the Hawai'i women's track and field team at the Husky Classic on Saturday. The Division I Indoor event attracted a number of big-name track schools to the Dempsey Indoor facility.

Buchanan led off the day with a school record in the Mile (4:53.49) and ended by anchoring the Distance Medley Relay to a second place finish, a school record and Western Athletic Conference-leading time.

With an NCAA provisional time in the 800m already this season, sophomore Kelly Young finished fifth in the 800m in a slow paced kicker's race.

"This not Kelly's race style" head coach Carmyn James said. "She runs best from a fast early pace that takes the kick away from the faster runners."

The reins were released from freshman Sabrina Reeve in the 3000m and she responded, finishing sixth in an event that saw four NCAA automatic qualifying marks achieved. Reeve, running 9:47,59, just missed the school record set by UH's greatest runner and two-time All-American, Cheryl Smith.

"I have been slowed down by a hip injury at the end of December but it has been rehabbed and I hope to start speed work very soon," Reeve said. "It's finally been great to just attack a race like this."

Other UH record marks occured in 60m heats from Ku`ulei Karratti (7.95) but failed to make the sprint finals, while Tasha Monroe notched a new long jump record of 5.51 meters and contributed a 56.5 second 400m leg to the Distance Medley Relay.
