Rainbow Wahine Shut Down Spartans

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. --Hawaii took a leg up in the WAC race with a 2-0 win over San Jose State Friday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Field. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 8-7-2 overall and took sole possession of first place in the WAC at 4-1.

The win was UH's fifth in the last six matches and also marked a milestone as head coach Pinsoom Tenzing and the UH soccer program notched its 100th all-time win. Natasha Kai returned after missing two straight matches due to injury and contributed with an assist on UH's first goal.

After a tightly-contest first half, Hawaii scored both its goals in the second half to pull away. Gabina Bohlman and Krisha Kai scored for the Rainbow Wahine, both on rebound shots in the box.

UH got on the board in the 51st minute when Natalie Groenewoud sent a cross from the right flank. Natasha Kai headed the ball toward goal and SJSU goalie Adrienne Herbst thwarted the shot but Gabina Bohlman one-time the ball right below the crossbar from 12 yards out for her second goal of the year.

The second goal came off the foot of Krisha Kai with less than eight minutes remaining in the game. After being awarded a corner kick, Koren Takeyama served a ball from the right corner. A mad scramble ensued in the middle of the box before Krisha Kai hammered home a right-footer from eight yards out.

Both goalkeepers were tested throughout the game with UH holding a 25-23 shot advantage. Kori Lu recorded 10 saves and notched her third solo shutout of the year. Lu has helped UH post five shutouts in its last six matches.

The Rainbow Wahine return home for their final home stand of the season. UH will next take on Nevada on Friday, Oct. 28 with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
