San Diego State Clips Hawai`i, 2-1

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif.-- Hawai`i continues to look for its first road win of the season after dropping a 2-1 decision to San Diego State Saturday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 3-6-2 with their second straight loss.

UH and SDSU were nearly even in shots (12-11, SDSU), but it was the Aztecs who made good on two opportunities, both in the first half. Despite the deficit, the Rainbow Wahine battled valiantly in the second half and got a score. But it wasn't enough as UH moved to 0-4-1 away from home this year.

The Aztecs (8-5) scored first in the 23rd minute when freshman forward Jen Mello got behind the UH defense and slotted a shot from the left side of the box to the upper far post.

The second goal came in the final minute of the first half when Amanda Swaider fed Erika Sutton at the top center of the box. Sutton trapped the ball turned and sent a low ball that slid under goalkeeper Kori Lu for the Aztec's second goal.

UH got on the board in the 65th minute when Shawn Higa sent a long ball deep into Aztec territory. An SDSU defender headed the ball back to her goalkeeper, but Natasha Kai intercepted the ball and send home a low ball to the right corner of the goal. The last three Hawaii goals have been off Higa-Kai connections.

The Rainbow Wahine return home where they will open Western Athletic Conference play against Idaho on Friday, Oct. 7. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
