Rainbows Give One Back to No. 3 Rice, 13-1

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball (29-17, 12-9 WAC) fell to the No. 3 Rice Owls (35-9, 17-3) 13-1 in front of a crowd of 2,745 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday. Clary Carlsen (6-6) took the loss for Hawai`i while Josh Baker (7-3) got the win for the Owls.

Isaac Omura led the 'Bows with a 1-for-2 game with a double, a walk and a run. Andrew Sansaver, Daniel Magana and Steve Bell-Irving provided the Rainbows with their three other hits on the game.

Rice jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer by Lance Pendleton. The two starters then showed great control for the next few innings as the Owls didn't score again until the fifth, as Pendleton knocked out his second home run, this one a solo shot, to right field.

Hawai`i was able to cut it to 3-1 in the sixth as Omura doubled before scoring on a two-base wild pitch.

But that would turn out to be the only offense for the 'Bows, as Rice bounced back with a huge seven-run seventh inning, including two, two-run home runs, making it 10-1. The Owls then added three more in the eighth to make the final 13-1.

The Rainbows will next host Fresno State for their final home series of the season, starting Thursday, May 13, at 6:35 p.m. The rest of the series will be on Friday, May 14, at 6:35 p.m. and Saturday, May 15, at 1:05 p.m.
