SAN JOSE, Calif. - In their season finale, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (31-24, 13-16 WAC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (23-31-1, 11-19) 6-4 in front of a crowd of 700 at Blethen Field. Senior
Clary Carlsen took the loss while Brady Kilby got the win for the Spartans.
Gregory Kish went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run. Brian Finegan had a 3-for-4 game with a run while Nathan Thurber added a 2-for-3 game with a run. Senior Jaziel Mendoza also added a 1-for-4 game with a home run.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a run on a single to right. Then the pitching took over for a while as neither team scored another run in the first four innings.
But then the Rainbow bats came alive in the top of the fifth. Kish started it off with a three-run shot off the scoreboard in left field. Mendoza then added a solo shot to left-center field, making it 4-1 Rainbows.
San Jose State cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on a homer by Brandon Fromm and a RBI-single by Kevin Frandsen, making it 4-3.
SJSU then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth as Josh Lansford hit a three-run homer to left field, making it 6-4 in favor of the Spartans.
Hawai`i was able to get a couple of runners on base in the ninth, but a pop-up to the catcher ended the game with the Rainbows falling by the final of 6-4.
Hawai`i ends their season at 31-24 overall and 13-16 in conference play while ending the careers of Finegan, Carlsen, Andrew Sansaver, Charles Withers, Joshua Green, Creighton Kahoalii and Mendoza.
