'Bows Fall to the Bulldogs 2-0 in Pitchers' Duel

FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (24-14, 8-6 WAC) defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs (18-25, 6-8) 2-0 in front of a crowd of 2,565 at Pete Beiden Field Saturday. Stephen Bryant (5-3) took the loss for the 'Bows, going 7.0 innings, giving up just two runs on five hits. Matt Garza (3-2) had a career game, striking out seven with just four hits in a complete-game shutout.

Jaziel Mendoza led the way for the 'Bows, going 2-for-4. Creighton Kahoalii and Brian Finegan added 1-for-4 games while Isaac Omura had his 11-game hitting streak come to a close.

Neither team found much offense throughout the game. The 'Dogs threatened with a runner on third base in the second, fifth and sixth innings, but failed to get a run in the first seven innings. The 'Bows didn't fair much better as their only real threat in the seventh inning, when Kahoali`i singled down the left line, moving Mendoza over to third base with just one out. But a failed sacrafice squeeze attempt and a strikeout killed the rally.

Fresno State finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth as Ryan Haag tripled in a run before scoring on a bloop-single by Brandon Marcelli, making it 2-0 Bulldogs.

Mendoza was able to get on base with a single in the ninth but Garza struck out the final batter to finish his masterpiece.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow as the Rainbows look to finish the road trip with a winning record. Clary Carlsen (6-4) is scheduled to pitch for the 'Bows against Fresno State's Brandon Miller (3-3).
