HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball (21-12, 6-4 WAC) beat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (12-27, 3-10) 8-4 in front of a crowd of 2,253 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday.
Guy McDowell (1-0) gave up no runs on just one hit in 3.1 innings of relief for the win. Matt Lacy (1-6) took the loss for Louisiana Tech.
Creighton Kahoalii led the way for the Rainbows going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Matthew Inouye added a 3-for-5 game with two runs, a double and a stolen base while Rocky Russo finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Andrew Sansaver added a 2-for-4 game with one run and one RBI.
The 'Bows got off to a fast start in the first inning as Russo hit a two-run single up the middle to make it 2-0. The Bulldogs responded in the third as a failed UH attempt at a double-play to end the inning resulted in La. Tech's first run, cutting it down to 2-1.
Hawai`i added to their lead in the fourth as Brian Finegan drove in Kahoali`i, making it 3-1.
Tech then got a run in the fifth before scoring two in the sixth, the second on a double steal in which Dusty McHale scored while Gary Holik was caught in the middle of a rundown, giving them a 4-3 advantage.
But the Rainbows came back in the seventh as Sansaver drove in a run before Kahoali`i hit a two-out, two-run single, giving UH the lead back at 6-4.
Daniel Magana was then able to give UH a little insurance, hitting a two-run triple in the eighth, making it 8-4. Louisiana Tech was able to get a couple of runners on base in the ninth before UH's fifth double play ended the threat and the game 8-4.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. with Stephen Bryant (4-2) pitching against Clayton Meyer (4-3).
