Delano Thomas had a career-high 23 kills and hit .655 in the Warriors 3-0 (30-28, 30-17, 30-26) rout of the visiting California Baptist University Lancers. The win snapped a three-match slide for the Warriors and snapped the Lancers 17-match winning streak. Hawai`i ups their overall record to 14-8, while the Lancers drop to 17-3.
Besides his 23 kills, Thomas also recorded one service ace, three digs and two block assists for the Warriors. Additionally Matt Bender put down 13 kills hitting .500 for the night and accumulated two assists, one ace, six digs and two blocks. Setter Kimo Tuyay dished up 42 assists and also had a team high two solo blocks, while libero Alfred Reft picked up 11 digs for the match. The Warriors recorded 10.5 blocks for the night while keeping the Lancers to three and a half blocks. Additionally Hawai`i hit .422 in the match and held CBU to .217.
In a replay of last night the Warriors and Lancers began the match evenly and kept that pace until mid game. At 11-all Hawai`i began to pull away, scoring eight points and only giving up three, making the score 19-14 and giving them a comfortable lead. The Lancers would close in to within one before the Warriors defense put up two crucial blocks that gave them a 28-26 advantage. A kill from CBU's Shamsu Awudu evened the score at 28, but a pair of CBU errors gave the Warriors the game, 30-28 and a 1-0 match advantage.
The Warriors dominated game two, jumping to an early 7-3 lead. But the Lancers went on a 4-1 run at mid game to close to within three before the Warrior's enjoyed a run of their own, snatching the next five points and an eight point lead. A kill from middle blocker Josh Stanhiser would give the Warriors a ten-point lead; Stanhiser went on to have four kills and four blocks for the night. The Warriors decisively won game two, 30-17 off a kill and an ace from Bender.
In game three the Warriors managed to maintain a semblance of control over the match as CBU tried to wrest that power away. The Lancers took their most substantial lead of the match at 13-10, but faced a Warriors squad determined to make it an early night. Hawai`i managed to keep the score close at mid game thanks to four kills from Thomas. At 20-all the Warriors commenced to pull away taking a 27-23 lead off a Bender kill. Hawai`i gave up only two more points before another Thomas kill gave the Warriors the game, 30-26 and the match.
The Warriors continue their home stand next week against MPSF foe, Long Beach State, on Friday April 2 at 7:00 pm at the Stan Sheriff Center.
