'Bows Fall Just Short in 4-3 Loss to Cal State Northridge

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (0-4) fell to the Cal State Northridge Matadors (3-1) 4-3 in front of a crowd of 2,134 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Clary Carlsen (0-2) gave up just two earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched but suffered the loss. Peter Eberhardt (1-1) got the win for the Matadors.

Brian Finegan and Jaziel Mendoza both hit 1-for-4 with a run and one RBI to lead the 'Bows. Matthew Inouye added a double while Stephen Bryant pitched 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Rainbows took their first lead of the season in the first inning, as Mendoza drove in Robbie Wilder to give UH the 1-0 lead.

The Matadors took the lead with a two-run third inning before the 'Bows added two in the fourth on RBI-singles by Finegan and Rocky Russo to take the lead back at 3-2.

But the Hawai`i lead would be short-lived, as Cal State Northridge added two more in the top of the fifth, to make it 4-3. UH threatened again in the seventh when Inouye smacked a double to right field with just one out. But he was then picked off at second, ending the last Rainbow threat, and keeping the final score at 4-3.

The two teams will hook up again tomorrow for another 6:35 p.m. game at the Les Murakami Stadium. Ricky Bauer will pitch for the 'Bows against CSUN's Kyle Jean.
