Rainbows Take Fifth-Straight with 6-3 Win Over UH-Hilo

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (6-5) defeated the UH-Hilo Vulcans (4-12) 6-3 in front of a crowd of 2,453 at the Les Murakami Stadium, extending their winning streak to five games. Ricky Bauer gave up three runs in 7.2 innings pitched, ending his streak of innings without an earned run at 23.1 consecutive innings, but still managed to pick up his third-straight win to up his record to 3-1. John Matson (0-2) got the loss for the Vulcans while Guy McDowell picked up his first save of the year.

Andrew Sansaver led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Joshua Green went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Nathan Thurber extended his streak to five games with at least one extra-base hit with a double in the eighth inning.

The 'Bows jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first after Sansaver hit a three-run double down the rightfield line, scoring Creighton Kahoalii, Green and Matthew Inouye.

Green then drove in one of his own in the third and scored another in the fifth to make it 5-0. Robbie Wilder drove in another run in the sixth to make it 6-0. It seemed Hawai`i would coast to victory as Bauer faced the minimum for the first six innings of the game.

But the Vulcans bats awoke in the eighth inning, as UH-Hilo errupted for five of their eight hits, and all three of their runs before the Rainbows went to the bullpen. From there, reliever Guy McDowell shut down the Vulcan attack, striking out the final batter of the eighth before putting them away with a hitless ninth to earn the save.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at the Les Murakami Stadium with Stephen Bryant pitching against Scott Siegfried.
