Stockton, CA –The No. 1 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team struggled in the beginning but came on strong in the end and concluded its four-match road trip with a win over No. 15 Pacific, 3-1 (30-20, 24-30, 30-27, 30-19). The Warriors swept through Northern California going 4-0 during the trip and extending their current win streak to eight with Tuesday's win; the squad is now 10-2, 7-1 MPSF.
The Warriors hit .385 for the evening and counted on outside hitter Pedro Azenha to pull them out of many tough spots. The sophomore hit .481 for the night and posted 18 kills, two service aces, four digs and two block assists. Junior Delano Thomas who put down 17 kills for the evening and counted four service aces, and two digs among numbers also helped Hawai'i's offense along. Middle blocker Joshua Stanhiser hit a team high .800 during the match and notched up 12 kills, one service ace and six block assists. Jose Delgado had a team high nine digs in the match and also served up one ace.
Pacific stayed close to start the match as the Warriors tried to get a momentum going. Hitting .364, the Warriors eventually took control and never lost it as they won the first game by a convincing 30-20.
In game two as the Warriors continued to find their groove, the Tigers, looking newly invigorated, found their rhythm and kept the lead for most of the game. Though the Warriors out hit Pacific, .467 to .208 Pacific took the second game 24-30.
The score continued to stay close in game four. But a fourth Thomas ace gave the Warriors the edge needed to gain a tentative lead that the squad 21-18 advantage. Pacific fought back to even out the score. But the resilient Warriors refused to give up and eventually took the game 30-27 to give them a 2-1 advantage in the match.
In game four Hawai'i took early 5-1 lead and went on to lead by as much as 11. The Warrior defense who went on to have 10 team blocks for the night helped stymie the Pacific offense, which was held to a .000 hitting percentage. The Warriors went on to win the fourth game, 30-19, and the match, 3-1.
The Warriors now travel home to prepare for a pair of matches against No. 2 UCLA at the Stan Sheriff Center (Feb. 26 and 28).
