HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (5-5) defeated the Hawai`i Pacific Sea Warriors (5-5) 10-2 in front of a crowd of 2,119 at the Les Murakami Stadium Tuesday. Freshman
Steven Wright (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out four for the win. David Zamarano (0-2) took the loss for HPU.
Matthew Inouye led the way for UH at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double. Joshua Green added a 2-for-5 game with two doubles and two RBI, while Robbie Wilder went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Nathan Thurber extended his extra-base hitting streak to four games with a double and two RBI.
After two scoreless innings, the Rainbows finally got on the board in the third with RBI-singles by Wilder and Inouye. Daniel Magana hit a RBI-double in the fourth to make it 3-0 before UH broke it open in the fifth, as Creighton Kahoalii drove in Finegan and Thurber hit a two-run double, making it 6-0.
That was more than enough for Wright, who pitched four no-hit innings before giving up his only hit to Alika Kuraoka in the fifth. HPU scored their first run in the sixth off a RBI-single by Ikaika DuPont. But UH came right back with a sacrifice fly by Inouye and a run-scoring double by Green, making it 8-1.
The Sea Warriors scored again in the seventh before Inouye and Green hit back-to-back RBI-doubles in the eighth, making the final 10-2.
The Rainbows will keep their inter-island swing going, hosting the UH-Hilo Vulcans for a three-game series at the Les Murakami Stadium, starting at 6:35 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20.
