Stockton, CA –The No. 2 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team put their 6-match winning streak to the test Monday night versus the No. 15 Pacific Tigers and came out victorious. The Warriors (9-2, 6-1 MPSF) triumphed over a determined Tiger team (4-10, 2-7 MPSF), 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-26) in 91 minutes.
Leading the offense for the Warriors was sophomore outside hitter Pedro Azehna with 17 kills and five service aces. Azenha also chalked up six digs, one assist and one block assist. Pacific came on strong in game one, taking a 15-13 lead by mid game. But the Warriors managed to stay in the game, largely off seven huge kills by Azenha and five from Thomas. The Warriors hit .306 in game one compared to Pacific's .216 percentage and managed a close 31-29 victory.
In game two, Pacific continued to play with a fierce enthusiasm that had kept the match close throughout the night. At 20-21 a Thomas kill and two consecutive points on LaBarre's serve gave the Warriors a decisive edge and the eventual 30-27 victory. Hawai'i continued to hit around .300 while Pacific improved to a .297 hitting percentage for the match.
By the third game Hawai'i had firmly taken control of the match and led by as much as six before a Stanhiser kill gave the Warriors game three, 30-26, and the match, 3-0. Perhaps most frustrating for Hawai'i was the Pacific defense which put up ten team blocks for the evening compared to the six and a half the Warrior defense posted.
