Box Score
IRVINE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (28-25) fell to the UC Irvine Anteaters (21-35) 2-0 in front of a crowd of 785 at the Anteater Field Wednesday.
Nicholas Ponomarenko (4-2) got the loss for UH while Chris Nicoll (1-2) picked up the win for UCI. Steve Schroer also got a save for the Anteaters.
UC Irvine scored a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth, and that was more than enough as the Rainbows only managed one hit, a double by Isaac Omura in the ninth inning. It was the fourth time that UH had been one-hit, the last coming last season to Mike Malott of San Jose State on March 28, in the Easter Tournament.
The Anteaters pitched by committee in their final game of the season as five pitchers combined to no-hit the 'Bows through eight innings before Omura got his hit in the ninth.
The four Rainbow pitchers, Ponomarenko, Justin Cayetano, Richard Olsen and Clary Carlsen combined to give up just one earned run while striking out 11 batters on the game.
Hawai`i will now head to San Jose, Calif., for their final series of the season, when they face the San Jose State Spartans.
