HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (27-24, 8-18 WAC) beat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (17-31-1, 9-17 WAC) 8-1 in front of a crowd of 3,649 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Christopher George (8-6) went 7.2 innings, giving up just four hits and one run while striking out 10 for the win. Adam Kirkendall (3-9) got the loss for the Bulldogs.
Brian Finegan led the way for UH, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and two runs. Jaziel Mendoza went 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and a run. Matthew Inouye also went 2-for-3 with a triple, one run and one RBI. Isaac Omura extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-4 performance with one run and one RBI.
Finegan started off the game with a bang, knocking out his second homer of the year to lead off the bottom of the first inning.
Louisiana Tech would answer back with a run in the second before the UH bats caught fire. Inouye tripled in a run in the second inning to get back the lead at 2-1. Inouye would again drive in a run in the fourth inning with Omura singling in another, making the score 4-1.
Mendoza would then put it out of reach in the fifth, hitting a two-run triple to put UH up 6-1. Hawai`i would then add insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, driven in by Mendoza and Andrew Sansaver, making the final score 8-1.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. It will be the final home game for the Rainbows, who will be sending off eight seniors with senior day ceremonies following the game.
