Rainbows Let One Get Away Against Fresno State, 5-4

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (12-5, 1-2 WAC) fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs (6-12, 2-1) 5-4 in front of a crowd of 2,807 at the Pete Beiden Field Sunday. Clary Carlsen got the loss for the Rainbows while Bryan Wolfenbarger (1-2) picked up the win for the Bulldogs.

Brian Bock had another big day for Hawai`i, going 2-for-3 with a home run. Isaac Omura added a 1-for-3 day with one RBI while Timothy Montgomery went 1-for-3 with one run and a double.

Starter Ricky Bauer pitched well for the 'Bows, going seven innings, giving up three runs while striking out three and walking just one. Bauer also retired 11 straight batters at one stretch between the fourth and seventh innings.

The Rainbows got on the board in the second inning as Jaziel Mendoza drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Omura whacked a run-scoring single, putting UH up 2-0.

Fresno State answered back in the third inning as Chris Patrick hit a run-scoring single. But Bock would continue his great weekend, blasting a leadoff homer to start the fourth inning, pushing the Rainbow lead to 3-1.

Montgomery then reached on a double in the seventh inning, before coming around to score on a wild pitch, extending the UH lead to 4-1. But the Bulldogs would fight back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one run at 4-3, heading into the ninth inning.

The 'Bows were unable to add any insurance runs at the top of the inning, giving the Bulldogs the opportunity in the bottom of the ninth. Fresno State would take full advantage, as Ryan Haag would hit the game-tying single before scoring on Casey McGehee's game-winning hit to right-center field that landed just past the outreached arm of Montgomery.

The Rainbows will now head back to the islands for a big week of baseball, starting Tuesday, Mar. 11 at 6:35 p.m., at the Les Murakami Stadium, against Hawai`i Pacific. They will then play Matzusaka of Japan in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Mar. 12 at 6:35 p.m. before hosting the top-ranked Rice Owls for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday series.
