'Bows Blast the Bulldogs 13-8

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (12-4, 1-1 WAC) beat the Fresno State Bulldogs (5-12, 1-1) 13-8 in front of a crowd of 2,500 at the Pete Beiden Field, Saturday. Richard Olsen got the win for the Rainbows while Matt Garza picked up the loss for the Bulldogs.

Brian Bock had a big day for UH, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs. Timothy Montgomery added a 3-for-4 day with a double, one RBI and three runs while Andrew Sansaver went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Brent Cook and Jaziel Mendoza also added home runs while Brian Finegan went 3-for-6 with one RBI and one run.

Olsen pitched 3.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs, recording three strikeouts and no walks. Justin Cayetano went 4.1 innings in the start, giving up three runs while striking out two.

Hawai`i started off with a big inning in the top of the second, as Montgomery and Finegan hit RBI singles to right field before Sansaver knocked a two-run double down the right field line, putting the 'Bows up 4-0. Fresno State answered in the bottom of the inning as Chase Moore hit a solo home run over the right field wall, cutting the Rainbow lead to 4-1.

Sansaver drove in another run in the top of the fourth, but the Bulldogs again responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, putting the score to 5-2.

Bock then added his third homer of the year in the top of the fifth, hitting a line drive that just cleared the left field wall. Fresno State would again respond with a run in the bottom of the inning, before Cook would hit his second homer of the season, scoring two runs, giving the Rainbows a 8-3 cushion after five and a half innings.

The Bulldogs would again respond in the bottom of the inning, matching UH's two runs in the sixth, cutting the lead back to 8-5. Mendoza added another home run, a three-run shot over the right field wall, running the Rainbow lead to 11-5 after seven innings.

Bock and Sansaver would drive in a couple of insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings before the Bulldogs would get three runs in the bottom of the ninth, ending the game at 13-8.

The two teams will close out their series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game at Beiden Field. Ricky Bauer will start for the 'Bows against Fresno State's Josh Glynn.
