FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (11-4, 0-1 WAC) fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs (5-11, 1-0) 6-3 in front of a crowd of 2,745 at the Pete Beiden Field Friday.
Christopher George (4-1) got the loss for the Rainbows while Cody Smith (2-2) picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Bryan Wolfenbarger also earned his second save of the year for Fresno State.
Daniel Magana led the way for UH, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Jaziel Mendoza added a 1-for-4 day with a double and a run. Freshman Michael Peck pitched well in relief, going 3.2 innings, giving up just two hits and no runs while striking out two.
Fresno State came out firing, scoring a run in the first, two in the second and two more in the third to go up 5-0 after three innings of play.
The Rainbow bats finally came alive with two outs in the top of the fifth inning as Magana hit a two-run single up the middle, scoring Bock and Mendoza. Andrew Sansaver drove in Green for another Rainbow run to cut the lead down to 5-3.
The Bulldogs would add another run in the bottom of the eighth, giving them a 5-3 cushion heading into the ninth inning. The `Bows would get two runners on base in the top of the ninth with two outs, but Casey McGehee made a great catch to record the final out, ending Hawai`i's rally hopes and the game at 6-3.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow at 1 p.m. Pacific time with Justin Cayetano scheduled to pitch against Matt Garza.
