HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (9-3) defeated the UH-Hilo Vulcans (5-26) 9-2 in front of a crowd of 2,594 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Christopher George (4-0) picked up the win for the 'Bows while Robert Shimabuku (0-5) got the loss for UH-Hilo.
Brian Finegan led the way for the Rainbows, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Rocky Russo added a 3-for-5 night with three RBI, one run and a double while Jaziel Mendoza went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
George finished the night going 6.0 innings, giving up just two runs while striking out six and walking none.
The Vulcans struck first in the second inning when Douglas Nassimbene hit a solo home run over the right field wall, putting UH-Hilo up 1-0. The Rainbows responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Finegan hit an RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.
Nassimbene added an RBI double in the top of the fourth before Hawai`i's Brent Cook added another run to again tie the game at 2-2.
Finegan then put UH up for the first time when he hit a three-run double to right field, giving the Rainbows a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Russo and Timothy Montgomery then added run-scoring doubles in the sixth inning, extending the Rainbow lead to 7-2.
Russo then added a two-run single in the seventh inning to give UH the final count of 9-2.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Justin Cayetano will pitch for the 'Bows against Brian Ebbs of the Vulcans.
