Box Score

HONOLULU - On Day 1 of the 40th Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, the Hawai'i men's basketball team rallied past Lamar, 94-88, Saturday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The win advanced the Rainbow Warriors (6-2) into the championship round of the tournament for the eighth consecutive year, where they will meet IUPUI in Monday's late semifinals.

The 'Bows overcame a 10-point halftime deficit with a 56 point second half. Senior guard Michael Kuebler had a game-high 28 points, including 16 after the break. Senior Phil Martin added 15 points and seven rebounds while forward Julian Sensley posted his second straight double-double (11 pts./10 rebs.). Senior Haim Shimonovich grabbed a season-high 12 boards.

As a team, the 'Bows shot 50 percent from the field and scored 90-plus points for the third consecutive game, a first since 1977.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 15-7 lead early in the contest. The 'Bows responded with five straight points by Kuebler and a bucket by Jeff Blackett to pull to within 17-14. Lamar extended its lead to 32-20 with 8:14 left after one of Raymond Anthony's five first half treys.

Moments later, an 11-0 UH run capped by a Jason Carter 3-pointer, closed the gap, 34-33. But back-to-back Anthony treys pushed the lead to 46-38 with just under 2:00 to play. A pair of Teddy Davis free throws put the Cardinals ahead 48-38 at the break.

After Gil Goodrich completed a 3-point play giving Lamar a 61-52 advantage with 13:58 remaining, the 'Bows answered back in a big way. UH scored on nearly every possession during a 16-0 run which gave them its first lead since early in the game.

A Logan Lee trey pulled Hawai'i to 61-59 and on its ensuing possession, Martin completed a 3-point play to give the 'Bows a lead they would not relinquish. When all was said and done, Hawai'i used a 23-2 run to turn a nine-point deficit into a 12 point lead.

Davis scored a team-high 23 points for the Cardinals (6-4). Anthony finished with 17 points and Terrell Pettaway added 16.

In the earlier game, IUPUI defeated East Tennessee State, 85-81. Guard Akeem Clark scored a game-high 33 points, on 9-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. Clark, who drilled six treys in the second half, was two 3-pointers shy of the tournament record. Odell Bradley added 27 points for the Jaguars.

The tournament continues Sunday with more first round games. Fairfield meets Bowling Green at 5:00 p.m. followed by Pepperdine and American at 7:30 p.m. The 'Bows and Jaguars are scheduled to meet at 7:35 p.m.
