FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (16-40, 5-25) fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs (32-27, 19-11) 6-5 in front of 3,264 fans on Senior/Bob Bennett day at Pete Beiden Field Sunday. It was the final game for eight Rainbow seniors along with the final game of the great career of Bulldog coach Bob Bennett. Zach Minor (6-4) got the win while senior
Sean Yamashita (2-9) picked up the loss for UH. Chad Edwards also picked up his third save of the year for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State started the scoring in the bottom of the second, starting with an unearned run scored by Ben Fritz. Brian Pierce then added a two-run home run later in the inning, putting the Bulldogs up 3-0.
The 'Bows came back in the fifth inning when Brian Bock and Danny Mocny hit back-to-back doubles to get UH their first run of the game. The Bulldogs then added two runs in the bottom of the inning, extending their lead to 5-1.
Hawai`i came up with another run in the top of the sixth when Tim Montgomery hit a two-out home run, his first of the season, over the center field wall, cutting the lead down to 5-2.
Fresno State added another run in the bottom of the seventh to get the lead to 6-2. But the Rainbows weren't ready to give up the 2002 season just yet, as Brent Cook hit a three-run home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the ninth, cutting the lead to one. Unfortunately that was all Hawai`i would get, falling by the final score of 6-5.
Senior Derek Honma continued to swing the hot bat for Hawai`i, going 3-for-4 on the day. Mocny, Montgomery and Julian Russell added 2-for-4 performances for the Rainbows, while Cook provided a 1-for-5 day with the big blast in the bottom of ninth and three RBI.
The game closed out the 2002 season for Lane Nogawa, Ryan Yamamoto, Derek Honma, Sean Yamashita, Gregg Omori, Matt Le Ducq, Aaron Pribble and Scooter Martines.
