RENO, Nev. – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (16-36, 5-21 WAC) fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack (24-29, 9-17) 11-2 in front of 1,451 fans at Peccole Park Sunday. James Holcomb (3-6) got the win while
Ricky Bauer (1-8) picked up the loss for UH. Craig Norris picked up his second save of the year for the Wolf Pack.
The two starters kept the hitters in check for the first three innings, before the Rainbow bats came up with two runs in the top of the fourth. Brent Cook started it off, hitting a solo home run, his second of the series, over the left field wall. Kevin Gilbride then followed with his first homer of the year to give Hawai`i the 2-0 lead.
The Wolf Pack answered back with one run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to tie the game up at two.
The 'Bows got a threat in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded to keep the game tied at 2-2. And UH paid for it, giving up three runs in the bottom of the inning. It could have been worse as the Matt Le Ducq got out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded, with a 5-2 deficit.
Nevada then padded their lead in the bottom of the eighth, getting six runs, three of which were unearned, to give them the final 11-2 win.
Leading the Rainbows were Cook and Gilbride who got the two runs off their home runs in the fourth inning. Derek Honma also got his sixth double of the year while Danny Mocny went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Bauer pitched well, giving up four runs in 6.2 innings while striking out six and walking just one.
The two teams will close out their three game series tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game at Peccole Park. The 'Bows will start junior Bryan Lee while Nevada is scheduled to start Darrell Rasner.
