'Bows Lose Shootout With Nevada 14-10

Reno, Nev. -– The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (16-35, 5-20 WAC fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack (23-29, 8-17) 14-10 in front of 1,340 fans at Peccole Park Saturday. Nevada's Mateo Miramontes (6-7) picked up the win while Chris George (6-5) got the loss for the 'Bows. Brian Johnson came in for the Wolf Pack to pick up the save.

Brent Cook started the scoring when he hit a two-out home run, his first of the season, over the left field wall in the top of the first. George then dodged a bullet in the bottom of the inning, as he loaded the bases with one out before retiring the next two batters to get out of the first with a 1-0 lead.

But Nevada came back and had a huge inning in the second, scoring 6 runs on three hits, while George hit three batters. Nevada then added to their lead in the fourth when Mike Hass hit a three-run home run to centerfield to go up 9-1.

Hawai`i refused to quit though as they came back with a huge fifth inning, scoring seven runs. Brian Bock started off the scoring, singling in a run to cut the lead to 9-2. After getting a run walked in, the 'Bows got a two-run single by Scooter Martines before Derek Honma provided the big blast on a three-run homer to cut the deficit down to 9-8.

The Wolf Pack struck again in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs including a three-run home run by Hass extend their lead back up to 13-8. The Rainbows were threatening to have another big inning in the sixth, but could only muster one run while leaving the bases loaded to keep the lead at 13-9.

Hawai`i kept chipping away, scoring another run on an RBI single by Bock in the top of the seventh. But the Wolf Pack again answered right back, getting another run on a solo homer by Chris Gimenez to put the lead back to 14-10.

The Rainbows had a great day offensively, led by Cook, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Gilbride and Russell also went 3-for-5 with two runs apiece. Nogawa also added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and an RBI.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. PDT at Peccole Park. The scheduled starters are Ricky Bauer and James Holcomb.
