HONOLULU – The hot hitting of junior outside hitter
Tony Ching and the dominant defensive play of All-American
Dejan Miladinovic sparked the second-ranked Warriors to a straight-set sweep of No. 4 Brigham Young, 30-26, 30-27, 30-22, to give Hawai'i it's fifth consecutive victory.
Ching, a native of Honolulu, recorded a match-high 14 kills with four errors in 27 swings for a .370 hitting percentage to kick-start the Warrior offense. Ching was ready to swing from the first serve of the night, as he put-down six kills in 11 swings in the first set. The 14 kills mark Ching's highest kill total of the season.
Miladinovic, a 6-foot-7 senior from Kraljevo, Serbia, was a force once again in the middle, putting-up 11 blocks to stall the Cougars attack and post the second-highest blocks total of the season. After recording two blocks in the first set, the Hawai'i all-time total blocks leader went in on five blocks in set number two as Hawai'i recorded 6.5 blocks in the set.
Junior Costas Theocharidis, who earned both AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week honors on Monday, added 13 kills of his own on 33 total attempts. Theocharidis enjoyed a well-rounded match, recording four block assists, a service ace and a match-high eight digs.
The Warriors, who are in sole possession of second place in the MPSF standings, will complete their regular-season tomorrow night against BYU. The action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. The match will be televised live, state-wide on K5, “The Home Team.” Rainbow Sports Radio (1420 AM) will also carry the match live.
