HONOLULU -- The UH Rainbow baseball team (9-19) fell to the UC Riverside Highlanders (16-11) 12-7 in the third day of the Ohana Rainbow Easter Tournament Wednesday at the Les Murakami Stadium. The ticket attendance for the day was 2,774. Picking up the win in relief for the Highlanders was Cordell Perkins while
William Quaglieri got the loss for Hawai`i.
The Rainbows got on the board early when Arthur Guillen scored a run in the first inning. But the Highlanders responded, scoring two in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
The Rainbows added two more runs in the top of the fourth when Guillen and Brent Cook drove in a run each to take back the lead at 3-2. UC Riverside came back and scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game again at 3.
Then the Hawai`i offense exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth when Cook and Nogawa drove in two runs each. But the Highlanders came back with a huge inning, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 12-7.
Then the pitching prevailed leaving the final score 12-7 in favor of UC Riverside.
Brent Cook led Hawai`i with a 2-for-4 night with one run scored and three RBI. Gilbride also hit 2-for-4 with a run scored. In earlier action, San Jose State and Lewis-Clark State pulled out victories over Hawai`i-Hilo and Hawai`i Pacific. The Spartans won the game on Adam Shorsher's three-run home run in the bottom of the eigth inning to give San Jose State the 6-5 win. Lewis-Clark State used two home runs, by Brendan Ryan and local boy Micah Furtado, to take out the Sea Warriors 12-1.
Tomorrow's schedule starts with a 10 a.m. game between HPU and Birmingham-Southern. UC Riverside and UH-Hilo will play the game scheduled for 2 p.m. before the Rainbows take on San Jose State in the nightcap.
