HILO -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-16) fell to UH-Hilo (8-25-1) 3-1 at the Francis Wong Stadium Sunday, being swept by the Vulcans for the first time ever.
Matt Le Ducq, who had three strikeouts while giving up two unearned runs, got the loss while Joel Zimmerman got the win.
Freshman Jason Piepmeier pitched great for the Rainbows, going 6.1 innings, giving up just three hits and one run, while striking out four. Le Ducq also pitched well, not giving up an earned run, but suffered the decision due to two unearned runs.
After giving up a run to the Vulcans in the bottom of the first, the Rainbows finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning when Scooter Martines knocked the ball out of the UH-Hilo catcher's hand in a play at the plate.
Hilo then got a break as Hawai`i gave up two earned runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to eventually pick up the victory 3-1.
The Rainbows will now turn their focus back to conference play as the San Jose State Spartans come to town to play a three-game series with Hawai`i. The series will start with a 6:35 p.m. game on Friday, March 22. Following the series with the Spartans, Hawai`i will host the Ohana Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Easter Tournament from March 25-31.
