Jose Delgado and
Daniel Rasay ignited the Hawai'i offense as the 3rd ranked Warriors outhit UC San Diego, .414-to-.076, to record their fifth consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday night, 30-23, 30-20, 30-18.
Outside hitter Delgado, a 6-foot-3 native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, carried the attacking load, recording a match-high 11 kills in 23 swings. The double-digit kill performance was Delgado's fourth in his last six appearances. After posting six kills though the first two sets, Delgado emerged to put-down five kills in seven attempts in the third set, hitting .714 to help complete the sweep.
Rasay, a product of Konawaena High School on the Big Island, entered in the second game for starter Kimo Tuyay with Hawai'i flexing a 25-16 lead. After helping the Warriors take the set, 30-20, Rasay returned from the intermission to spark Hawai'i to a remarkable .704 hitting percentage in the third and final set, with 20 kills and one attacking error in 27 swings. Rasay finished with 16 assists on the night.
Hawai'i junior outside hitter Tony Ching made a successful return to competition after sitting out the past seven matches with an injury to his hitting shoulder, recording four kills in seven swings on a .429 attack percentage.
Warrior captain Eyal Zimet enjoyed an efficient evening, with seven kills and no errors for a .583 clip, while All-American Costas Theocharidis added seven kills in two games.
Senior middle Dejan Miladinovic had a match-high five block assists and four kills on a .667 hitting percentage in his two games of action.
The Warriors and Tritons meet again tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
