HONOLULU - Hawai'i used a 26-4 first half run in cruising past San Jose State, 71-46, Saturday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors (21-4, 12-2) remained a half-game behind Tulsa in the Western Athletic Conference standings, setting up a showdown for the league lead next Thursday.
All 13 eligible players saw action for the 'Bows as head coach Riley Wallace emptied his bench early and often. Seldom-used walk-on Lance Takaki played two-plus minutes in the first half as Hawai'i had a comfortable 18 point lead at the break.
Sophomore Carl English led the team with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He was also 3-of-5 from long range, including two assists and two steals. Reserve guard Mike McIntyre finished with 17 points with three treys. Senior Predrag Savovic had 14 points and five rebounds.
The 'Bows shot 52 percent from the field, including 9-of-21 from beyond the arc. UH also out-rebounded the Spartans 31-to-26, forced 19 turnovers, and had 10 steals. UH limited SJSU to 36.2 percent shooting and just 10 points until the 4:00 mark of the first half.
UH increased its lead to as much as 30 in the second half, as the Spartans never threatened the rest of the way.
Hawai'i held San Jose State forward David Granucci to just two points in 31 minutes. In the Spartans win over the 'Bows in San Jose, Calif., Granucci scored 17 points in earning WAC player of the week honors.
Hawai'i hosts Tulsa, Thursday, Feb. 21. The 'Bows are looking for the series sweep, having already defeated the Golden Hurricane, 90-82, in Tulsa on Jan. 29. Tulsa has since run off seven straight victories.
