Fong, Quattromani Boot Rainbows to 2-1 Win Over TCU

Box Score

FORT WORTH, Tex. - Hawaii's Pam Fong and Erin Quattrimani scored a goal apiece as the Rainbow Wahine (6-7-2, 2-2-0 WAC) posted a 2-1 win in a non-conference match at TCU (2-10-5) in overtime today.

Quattromani, a senior midfielder, ran-onto a well-paced pass from Seline Williams and hit a left-footer from about 12 yards out to give the Rainbow Wahine the game-winner just 50 seconds into overtime. Williams and junior Arlene Devitt combined on a well-executed give-and-go at the top of the TCU penalty box to set up the score. Williams hit Devitt with a pass near the top of the box, with Devitt back-heeling a pass back to Williams to set up her pass to Quattromani. The goal was Quattromani's second of the season. Devitt's assist was her fifth, while Williams earned her first collegiate assist on the score.

Hawaii sophomore striker Fong made the score 1-1 at 55:41 when she connected on her first goal of the year. Arlene Devitt set-up the score when she ran onto a long through ball from defender Noelle Takemoto and sent a square, right-footed cross to a sprinting Fong, who made a parallel run on the other side of the TCU penalty box. Fong ran unmarked onto the ball and finished with a right-footer that beat Horned Frog keeper Ruth DeJong. The assist was Devitt's fourth of the season and the first of Takemoto's career.

Fong almost posted her second score of the half in the 60th minute when she picked the ball off a TCU defender at the top of the Horned Frogs penalty box and made a run at goal before being dispossessed just before getting her shot off.

The scoreless first period saw the two squads struggle through the slow, soft and muddy conditions of the rain-soaked playing surface at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium. TCU had the two most legitimate scoring opportunities in the half on a pair of loose ball attempts in the Hawaii penalty box.

Hawaii keeper Jennifer Churchill made a save on an awkward bounce of a Kristi Nebouzuk header late in the half to keep the match at a scoreless tie. Nebouzuk flicked a corner kick from a TCU teammate on the right flank that went about 12 feet straight up in the air inside the six yard box. The ball, which appeared to clear the cross bar, came down just inside the post and skipped in the mud toward the net, forcing Churchill to dart over and push the ball out of harm's way.

Krystalynn Ontai made an outstanding save of a sure goal a few moments later when she held her ground at the near post after a TCU corner kick and put her body in front of Elizabeth Walsh's shot to prevent another score.

TCU cracked the scoreboard at 53:14 when Jenny Swanson hit on a looping right footer from 16 yards out on the far right side of the Hawaii penalty box. Swanson's effort sailed over Churchill's hands and settled inside the far post.

Regulation ended at a 1-1 deadlock, pushing the contest into overtime. The Rainbow Wahine had a golden opportunity to avoid the extra period with just three minutes left when Erin Quattromani found a streaking Joelle Sugai on the right flank. Sugai drove to goal, beat a TCU defender and then sent a ground ball across the goal mouth where three Hawaii attackers had congregated. But Carmen Calpo's attempt from five yards out deflected out of bounds off of the goal post.

Hawaii returns home tomorrow morning to ready for its final home stand of the season. The Rainbow Wahine will host Boise State (Oct. 25) and Nevada (Oct. 27) this coming Friday and Sunday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Sunday's Hawaii-Nevada match will be aired live throughout the 50th state on KFVE, "The Home Team" at 5:00 p.m. Kick-off for Friday's Boise State contest is set for 7:00 p.m. -uh-
