WAHINE SOCCER EDGED BY MATADORS, 3-2Hawai‘i - Senior Starsiak Ties School Points Mark

Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team ended their two-week hiatus and Cal State Northridge's scoreless match streak, but could not overcome a pair of second half goals, falling to the Matadors, 3-2, at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium Saturday night.

The Wahine, who had not played a match in two weeks due to the recent terrorist attacks on the U.S., fell behind 1-0 when Northridge's Erin Broadwell scored-off an assist from Shannon DeVos at the 24:19 mark.
Hawai'i registered their first goal less than three minutes later, when senior Jennifer Starsiak chipped an arching pass to Wahine leading scorer Arlene Devitt in the Matador penalty box. Devitt beat CSUN keeper Jenny Willemse to net the first goal scored against the Matadors this season. Devitt's goal ended Willemse's scoreless match streak at six contests.
Starsiak's assist gave her 36 career offensive points, tying the school mark set by former All-WAC striker Tricia Nishikawa in 1998.
The Wahine stormed back for another score at 38:22 when Tia Medeiros charged-onto fellow freshman Joelle Sugai's cross and volleyed it into the back of the net. Junior midfielder Tiffany Makue started the scoring play by passing-off to Sugai. Both Makue and Sugai were credited with assists.
In the second half, Cal State Northridge's Lisa Gouveia scored twice to give the Matadors the come-from-behind victory. Gouveia scored at 54:52 off an assist from Jennifer Fish, and then struck again at 61:47, winning a one-on-one situation against a Hawai'i defender before sending her shot past Wahine keeper Jennifer Churchill to help her team remain unbeaten this season.
The Wahine and Matadors will meet again on Monday, at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, with kick-off set for 7:00 p.m. -uh-
