LUSK HEADS HAWAII INTO WAC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Sophomore Scores Twice to Send Wahine to Title Match

DALLAS, Tex. – The University of Hawaii women's soccer team controlled play in its Western Athletic Conference semifinal, outshooting Rice, 20-to-7, to defeat the second-seeded Owls, 2-0 on a pair of Liz Lusk headers.

The Wahine opened the scoring at 25:06 when sophomore defender Lusk leaped high to put a head onto Jennifer Starsiak's corner kick, beating Rice goalkeeper Amanda Garrison for her third goal of the season. The assist was Starsiak's fourth of the season.

Hawaii created several scoring opportunities during the first half, outshooting the Owls, 9-to-3. Both of the Wahine's starting strikers, Veronica Flores and Arlene Devitt, had clear shots at the goal, but missed wide.

Freshman midfielder Joelle Sugai had a genuine opportunity halted less than two minutes into the second half when she was slide tackled from behind in the Rice penalty box. No penalty was whistled on the play.

Lusk struck again at (32:40) with another header goal off a corner kick, this time finishing on freshman defender Krystalynn Ontai's left-footed, line-drive corner. The assist gave Ontai five on the season, tying her with Sugai for the school's freshman record. It was also her third in as many contests.

Wahine junior goalkeeper Jennifer Churchill set a new school record, posting her 10th win of the season to improve her win-loss mark, to 10-5-0 on the year. Churchill organized the defense, making five saves in the effort.

Hawaii now advances to face the winner of the SMU-Fresno State semifinal on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m.
