WAHINE SOCCER DROPS TOUGH MATCH TO SMU, 3-1: Loses Conference Match Before School-Record 2,488 Fans

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i and SMU battled for over 80-minutes before the Mustangs pulled away with a pair of late goals to decide the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium before a record crowd of 2,488.

SMU opened the scoring early, when All-WAC performer Sarah Harvey put-away a goal at 8:36. Erin MacCallum made a run down the left-side of the Wahine defense and made a right-footed cross into the Hawai'i penalty box where Harvey volleyed a soft shot over the out-stretched hands of keeper Jennifer Churchill.

Hawai'i sophomore defender Liz Lusk netted the equalizer at 59:37, to post her second score of the season. Lusk made a run to the near post and put a head onto Kristalynn Ontai's well-placed left-footed corner kick to even the match at one apiece. The assist was the first of freshman Ontai's career.

The Wahine and Mustangs proceeded to battle for the next 20 or so minutes before Kim Harvey scored an unassisted goal at 81:12. Harvey sent a left-footed shot from about 30-yards out just over a leaping Churchill to notch the game-winner.

SMU's Tara Comfort scored the insurance goal at 84:51, when she worked down the right flank and cut in to drill a right-footed shot inside the far post from about 12-yards out.

The Wahine received solid a solid performance from defender Carmel Hurley, who shut down many attacks on the right side of the Hawai'i defense.

Hawai'i keeper Churchill also put forth a strong effort, matching a her career high with 11 saves against the league-leading Mustangs.

The attandance of 2,488 set a new high for the Wahine soccer program, surpassing the previous high of 1,772 set last season against Oregon State.

Hawai'i continues it's season on the road this weekend, when they travel to face Boise State (Oct. 26) and Nevada (Oct. 28).
