2018 (Senior): Earned all-Big West first team honors as a libero...earned three Big West Defensive Player of the Week Awards (9/10, 10/22, 11/19)...started all 27 matches and played in all of UH's 102 sets...finished the year with 465 total digs, which ranks her at No. 4 in UH history for single-season digs...in the NCAA first round against No. 25 Baylor, Akiu broke the single-match record (5 sets) with 34 digs, breaking the previous mark of 33 digs set by Melissa Villaroman against Fresno State in 2002...had double-digit digs in all but one match--including six matches with 20+ digs and a career-high 34 vs. Baylor...was third on the team with 94 assists and fourth with 13 service aces.
Prior to UH (2015-17): Played three seasons as a libero/defensive specialist at Texas Tech (Lubbock, Texas)...appeared in 90 matches for the Red Raiders...as a sophomore, finished ranked second in Texas Tech history with 547 single season digs...last year as a junior she played in 29 of the team's 34 matches with 11 starts...was the team's libero in 16 matches but suffered a mid-season injury which held her out of a few games...recorded a career-high 33, vs. Baylor (Nov. 2, 2016)...she finished second on the team with 373 digs and she surpassed the 1,000 career dig milestone last year, ending her Red Raider career with 1,086 total digs.
Prep: A 2015 graduate of Kamehameha Schools--Kapalama...was a three-year starter for the Warriors volleyball team and also earned three varsity letters in track and field competing in the triple jump...was a teammate of fellow Rainbow Wahine senior Faith Ma‘afala...earned all-state honorable mention honors as junior...also finished fourth in the state in the triple jump in track and field.
Personal: Born in Honolulu, O‘ahu...majoring in political science...has one older brother and one younger sister...parents are Kilolani and ReVere Akiu of Honolulu, O‘ahu.
