2000 (FRESHMAN): Played in 13 matches, started six…started his first match against Stanford (March 24) and recorded a career-high 14 kills  and hit for a .619 percentage…led the team in hitting percentage (.435)……also had a career-high six blocks at San Diego State (March 28)…finished the season with two matches in double-figure kills…hit over .500 four times.

PREP: A 1998 graduate of G. Holmes Braddock Sr. New World School of the Arts in Miami, Fla.…lettered in volleyball, swimming, basketball and crew…named to the all-state and all-district teams in volleyball…also selected to the all-tournament team twice at the Junior Olympic Nationals…member of the championship team at Southside Juniors in Junior Olympics in 1999.

PERSONAL: Born Dec. 19, 1980, in Miami, Fla.…nickname is “JoJo”… aspires to be a symphony musician…favorite athlete is former UH All-American Yuval Katz…other favorites include the movie “The Professional,” actor Pierce Brosnan and musical group The Dave Matthews Band… would like to play music and volleyball in Europe upon graduation …also recruited by Rutgers, NJIT and George Mason …has one brother and two sisters…parents are Hortensia Michelena and Policarpo Chala of Miami, Fla.
