Box Score NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The University of Hawaiʻi women's tennis team struggled to find its footing on the road Saturday, falling 7-0 to CSUN at the Matador Tennis Complex.
Despite a strong showing in doubles play, the Rainbow Wahine (6-10, 3-6 Big West) were unable to overcome a surging Matadors (14-7, 5-4 Big West) squad that swept through singles competition.
The afternoon began with promise for Hawaiʻi in doubles. The pairing of Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno notched a dominant 6-2 victory over CSUN's Emma Moratalla Sanz and Sandra Isabela Arguelles at the No. 2 spot. However, the Matadors responded with a 6-4 win at No. 1 and secured the opening point when Satsuki Ishikawa and Elena Shepperson edged out Isabella Pampulov and Allaire Berl, 6-4, on court three.
In singles, the most competitive battle of the day occurred at the No. 3 position. After dropping a tight first-set tiebreaker, Hawaiʻi's Galindo roared back to take the second set 6-3 against CSUN's Nicole West. With the team match already decided, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, which West narrowly claimed to complete the sweep.
The Rainbow Wahine will stay in California as they will participate in the Women's Big West Championships next week.
