Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team got another strong effort on the mound, but fell 2-0 in the series opener at CSU Bakersfield Friday night at Hardt Field.
The Rainbow Warriors were shut out for the fourth time this season, missing out on a few chances to put up runs in going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position on the day.
Starting pitcher
Isaiah Magdaleno (3-2) turned in a solid effort for Hawai'i (18-15, 6-7 Big West), racking up eight strikeouts over five innings. Magdaleno limited the Roadrunners to just one earned run on six hits, but the UH offense struggled to provide support against Bakersfield starter Ryan King. King held the Rainbow Warriors to three hits over six frames before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
The Roadrunners (16-22, 5-8 Big West) struck first in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage.
Hawai'i had chances to strike early in the game, putting runners on first and second with no outs in the third inning before making a pair of outs on the bases to end the threat. UH then loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but couldn't score.
In the ninth, the Rainbow Warriors had a chance to rally with two outs.
Draven Nushida, who finished the game 2-for-4, sparked the threat with a single. Pinch-hitter
Garrett Greco followed with a bunt single that advanced Nushida to third following a Bakersfield throwing error, putting the tying runs on base with two outs. However, Roadrunner closer Jacob Gutierrez induced a game-ending strikeout.
Tsubasa Tomii turned in another strong effort in relief of Magdaleno. The native of Japan worked 2.2 scoreless frames with a strikeout while holding the Roadrunners without a hit to keep UH in it until the end.
The two teams continue their series Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. HT.
