Softball Powers Past UC Davis to Clinch Series

DAVIS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (10-11, 2-1 Big West) overpowered UC Davis in the series finale, 9-1 in seven innings. For head coach Panita Thanatharn, it marked her first conference series victory of her inaugural season at Hawai'i. Hawai'i starting pitcher Hannah Pitts earned the win to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Milan Ah Yat finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI on Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field in Davis, Calif..

Pitts followed her three-hit, complete-game shutout from a day ago, with another strong performance. On Saturday, Pitts allowed just one run on four hits with five strikeouts in six complete innings. Reliever Macy Brandl and the UH defense went 3-up, 3-down in the final inning of the game.

Hawai'i jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Ah Yat in the second. The blast scored Bailey Nagasako who drew a walk to start the inning.

UC Davis responded with a solo home run by Naomi Kalanetra that cut UH's lead in half in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the fourth, back-to-back RBI triples by Ah Yat and Kayara Tuiloma plus a two-out RBI-single by Carys Murakami extended UH's lead to 5-1.

Hawai'i added four runs in the top of the seventh. Murakami and Maycen Gibbs led off with consecutive singles to start the frame. Jamie McGaughey then drilled a double to centerfield to drive in both Murakami and Gibbs. Kolbi Kochi followed with an RBI-single to right-centerfield to score pinch runner Kennedy Thompson. Ah Yat then drove in pinch runner Abby Sasaki from second for her career-high fourth RBI of the game that extend UH's lead to 9-1.

UC Davis used three pitchers on the afternoon. Starter Caroline Grimes (7-8, 1-2 BW) took the loss, throwing 3.0 innings. She allowed 5 runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Ashley Sawai threw the next three innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a wal and three strikeouts, and Ellena Edison threw the final frame giving up a run on two hits.
