Softball Drops Series to Cal State Fullerton, 2-1

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (11-13, 3-3 Big West) completed all three games of their series against Cal State Fullerton (16-10, 5-1 BW) on Sunday afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'i held on to shutout the Titans in Game which resumed from the bottom of the fourth. But then Cal State Fullerton would rally to defeat the 'Bows, 7-5 and 6-5 to clinch the series, 2-1.

The two teams withstood a weekend full of heavy rains and winds and were able to get all three games in on Sunday afternoon. Late in the second game, the teams had to endure about a 20 minute rain delay, but other than that, conditions throughout Sunday were favorable. Originally, the UH abd CSF series was supposed to start with a doubleheader on Friday night and a single game on Saturday. But with the severe Kona Storm WASHED AWAY the original schedule. Instead, the teams tried to get a game in on Thursday night, which was suspended in the fourth and completed on Sunday with the doubleheader following the completion of Game 1.. 
 
GAME 1: Hawai'i 3, Cal State Fullerton 0
Hawai'i starting pitcher Hannah Pitts fired a complete-game shutout, spacing four hits through seven innings of work. She gave up one walks and tied her season-high with five strikeouts.With the win, Pitts improve to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in conference.
 
Hawai'i resumed the game with a runner at first and no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Nevaeh Telles executed a bunt, but the throw went to second was unsuccessful, leaving runners at first and second and one out. After a strikeout, Carys Murakami drew a walk to load the bases. Maycen Gibbs looped a single to shallow right to allow Cierra Yamamoto to score from third. Then Jamie McGaughey lifted a sac fly to foul territory on the first base side that drove in Telles to give UH a 3-0 lead.
 
The Titans' starter Trisha McCleskey took the loss, dropping her record to 9-7 overall. She threw the first 1.2 innings. She gave up one run on zero hits with three walks and a strikeout. Leanna Garcia threw the final 4.1 innings. She gave up wo runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
 
GAME 2:
Cal State Fullerton started the third with back-to-back singles. With runners at first and third the Titans execute a double steal to take a 1-0 lead. Later with runners at first and second, Nataly Lozano hit an RBI-double to the left-center gap to drive in a second run to lead, 2-0.
 
Hawai'i got one run back in the fourth on a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence by Milan AhYat. It marked Ah Yat's fourth homer of the season and her ninth as a Rainbow Wahine.
 
The Titans extended their lead to 6-1 with a pair of home runs and an RBI-double in the top of the fifth.
 
The Rainbow Wahine started chipped away, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ah Yat drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Maycen Gibbs. Then with the bases still loaded, Kayara Tuiloma drove a single through the 5-6 hole to score both Jamie McGaughey and Millie Fidge to cut their deficit to 6-4.
 
In the sixth, UH had runners at the corners and two outs when Briana Maio-Silva hit a grounder to short that resulted in an error which allowed Teiah Keliiholokai to score from third. After six complete innings, the Titans led, 6-5.
 
But in the seventh, CSF added an insurance run on an Ava Arce RBI-single which drove in Sarah Coccilious for a 7-5 lead.
 
The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh with the top of the order due up. But the Titans got a strikeout and a fielder's choice to stymie UH and end the game.
 
Hawai'i starter Macy Brandl took the loss, dropping her record to 2-1 overall. She threw the first 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Fidge threw the final 2.1 innings. She gave up one run on four hits with a walk and and strikeout.
 
Cal State Fullerton's Eva Hurtado earned the win, tossing the first 4.2 innings. She allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Trisha McCleskey came in relief and threw 1.1 innings.She gave up a run on a hit with three walks and one strikeout. Leanne Garcia earned the save, tossing the last inning. She gave up one hit with a wal and a strikeout.
 
Game 3: Cal State Fulleton 6, Hawai'i 5
Hawai'i got off to a hot start as UH designated player Fidge launched a grand slam in the first inning to give the 'Bows a 4-0 lead right off the bat. It marked Fidge's first home run of the season and her third of her career.
 
But the Titans would then start to launch some boms to seesaw ahead of the 'Bows. In the second, Arce hit a two-run homer; in the fourth Nataly Lozano lifted a two-run homer and Arce blasted a solo shot for her second of the game to give the Titans a 5-4 lead. In the sixth Lozano struck again hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Sarah Perez for a 6-4 lead.
 
Ah Yat drilled her second home run of the day to centerfield to cut their deficit to one run, 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be as close as UH would get.
 
Hawai's Taryn Irimata threw the first 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Pitts took the loss, dropping her record to 6-4. She threw the final four innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
 
CSF's McCleskey earned the complete game win to improve to 10-7 overall. She allowed six runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
 
Hawai'i will now hit the road for a three-game series at Long Beach State. The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Friday, March 20th at 1:30 p.m. HT and 3:30 p.m. HT. The series will conclude with a single game on Saturday, March 21 at 10:00 a.m. HT.. The series marks a return to the alma mater of UH head coach Panita Thanatharn who also was a long time assistant/associate head coach with The Beach.
