Softball Pulls Away from CSUN in Series Opener

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i softball team (14-14, 6-4 Big West) pulled away to defeat CSUN, 7-1 on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Behind a complete-game performance from starting pitcher Taryn Irimata and offensive fireworks provided by Millie Fidge and Kolbi Kochi, the 'Bows opened the series vs. the Matadors with a win.

Irimata fired her sixth complete game of the season as she improved to 5-6 overall. The win marked her third consecutive win over the last week, as she won the last two games at Long Beach State last week. She scattered three hits, allowed one run on two walks and three strikeouts.

Hawaii struck first in the bottom of the first when Fidge reached on an error, which allowed Rhea Furtado to cross the plate for an early 1-0 lead
.

In the third inning, after Carys Murakami drew a leadoff walk, Fidge launched a two-run home run to deep centerfield, extending UH's lead to 3-0. It marked Fidge's fourth home run in the last five games.
 
CSUN responded by scoring their only run in the fourth when Savannah Simons grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Ta'Tiannah Wright.

The Rainbow Wahine answered back in the bottom of the fourth with RBI hits from Kayara Tuiloma and Briana Maio-Silva that drove in pinch-runner Abby Saski and Tuiloma, respectively

Kolbi Kochi added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo home run to right field
. It marked her first career home run.

CSUN starter Kaitlyn Tso took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings. She allowed seven runs on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout. Alizae Cole got the final two outs and gave up a hit with a strikeout.

Hawai'i and CSUN will finish their three-game series on Saturday, March 28, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m. HT.
