Softball Sweeps Series Over CSUN

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (16-14, 8-4 Big West) swept  CSUN (9-19, 5-7 BW) in Saturday's doubleheader. UH shutout the Matadors in the first game 3-0 with Hannah Pitts earning the complete game shutout. Then the Rainbow Wahine pulled away in the series finale, 10-3 with reliever Taryn Irimata earning her second win of the series. The 'Bows outscored the Matadors 19-to-4 over three games at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. This marked the first series sweep for the Rainbow Wahine since winning three games at Cal State Bakersfield last year. With today's wins, UH has clinched three Big West series thus far, UH has won its last five-straight games (its longest win streak of the year) and is above .500 for the first time since February 20th.
 
DOUBLEHEADER – Game 1: Hawai'i 3, CSUN 0
The Rainbow Wahine won 3-0 behind the pitching of Pitts who earned a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits and striking out five in seven innings.
 
UH took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Rhea Furtado walked, stole second, and scored from second. base on a throwing error. Kayara Tuiloma added a solo home run in the fourth inning, and Maycen Gibbs drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to score Teiah Keliiholokai to extend UH's lead to 3-0. Despite recording six hits, CSUN left 11 runners on base in the loss.
 
CSUN's Malia Williams also threw a complete game in the loss that dropped her record to 4-8 overall. She allowed three runs on four hits with six walks and six strikeouts.
 
DOUBLEHEADER – Game 2: Hawai'i 10, CSUN 3
In Game 2, Hawai'i pulled away to defeat CSUN, 10-3 in the series finale. After CSUN took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Rainbow Wahine responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. The rally included a two-RBI double by Jamie McGaughey and RBI singles from Carys Murakami and Milan Ah Yat. The Matadors also walked three runs in with the bases loaded as UH led after one inning, 8-2.
 
UH added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings on RBI singles by pinch-hitters Cierra Yamamoto and Briana Maio-Silva.
 
In the pitching circle, sophomore Taryn Irimata, the reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week, threw 5.1 innings in relief to earn her second win of the series. She has won four straight games to even her overall record at 6-6 while improving to 4-1 in conference play. She allowed just one run while spacing three this with three walks and five strikeouts. Hawai'i starter Macy Brandl threw the first inning, giving up two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Maryn MacNeil recorded the final two outs of the game with one walk.
 
CSUN starter Kaitlyn Tso was not able to record an out in the first inning, but she allowed five runs on three hits with three walks. Alizae Cole came in relief in the first inning with no outs and threw six full innings. She allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
 
The Rainbow Wahine travel to Los Angeles to play a non-conference game at #7 UCLA on Thursday, April 2, at 12:00 p.m. HT at Easton Stadium. UH then continues Big West play at UC Santa Barbara with a single game on Friday, April 3, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4.
