LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Hawai'i opposite
Kainoa Wade was named the AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Week after helping the Rainbow Warriors to a three-match sweep of their road trip to Pennsylvania last week with wins over Saint Francis and Penn State.
Wade, a sophomore from Kailua, O'ahu, earned his first career player of the week award on Monday after being selected as the Big West's Offensive Player of the Week. For the week, he totaled a team-best 44 kills (4.40 avg.) and 55 points (5.55 avg.).
The award marks the 36
th time in program history a Rainbow Warrior was named national player of the week.
Kristian Titriyski received the award last season after leading UH to a two-match sweep of UC Irvine.
Wade also led the team with seven aces (0.70 avg.) and 19 digs (1.90 avg.) and posted eight blocks (0.80 avg.) in the three matches. He matched his career-high with 21 kills, hitting .450 with three aces, five digs and four blocks in a four-set win over Penn State to close out the road trip.
In addition, Wade had nine kills, three aces, five digs, and two blocks in the series opener against of the Nittany Lions and opened the trip with a team-high 14 kills, hitting .545 with one ace, career-high nine digs, and two blocks against Saint Francis.
Hawai'i has the week off and will next play a pair of road matches at Stanford, Feb. 13-14 in Stanford, Calif.
